Peter Zaffino is an American insurance industry executive. He was appointed executive vice president and global chief operating officer of AIG in July 2017, and then CEO of the company's General Insurance business in September 2017. Prior to joining AIG, Zaffino served as CEO of Marsh, chairman of Marsh & McLennan Companies' Risk & Insurance Services segment and president and CEO of Guy Carpenter. He is on the board of directors of the Michael J. Fox Foundation and the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund.

Early life and education
Peter Zaffino was born to Salvatore D. Zaffino and Marion Zaffino. Zaffino holds a BA in economics from Boston College, where he played soccer. He also holds an MBA in finance from New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business, and the CPCU and Associate in Reinsurance designations.

Career
Guy Carpenter
Zaffino became active in the insurance and reinsurance industry around 1990. Early in his career, he held a number of senior executives roles at a portfolio company of GE Capital, which specialized in alternative risk insurance and reinsurance. From GE Capital Services, in 2001 Zaffino joined Guy Carpenter & Company, LLC, a reinsurance intermediary of Marsh & McLennan in New York City. He held several positions at Guy Carpenter, such as head of global specialty practices and head of treaty operations in the United States. Also serving on the company's management board as a managing director, in early 2008 he became Guy Carpenter's president and CEO.
Marsh CEO and risk chairman
Marsh & McLennan Companies, a professional services firm that includes risk management companies Marsh and Guy Carpenter and consulting firms Mercer and Oliver Wyman Group, appointed Zaffino as a member of its executive committee in 2008. The company subsequently appointed him as president and CEO of Marsh, Inc. in early 2011. Under Zaffino, Marsh built an analytics solution delivered through a mobile platform using real-time data. In early 2015 Marsh & McLennan named him chairman of the company's Risk & Insurance Services segment, which included both Marsh and Guy Carpenter. Retaining his role as CEO of Marsh LLC, Zaffino oversaw the expansion of Marsh & McLennan Agency. The agency serves clients in the small- and mid-market brokerage marketplace.
AIG CEO of General Insurance
Zaffino was named executive vice president and global chief operating officer of AIG in July 2017 and was appointed CEO of General Insurance in September 2017, under AIG's new organizational structure. As AIG's CEO of General Insurance, Zaffino is responsible for commercial and personal insurance as well as US and international field operations. He also joined AIG's executive leadership team. According to the Wall Street Journal, Zaffino was "recruited to be one of newly appointed AIG CEO Brian Duperreault's top lieutenants." Duperreault stated that Zaffino would work closely with him to develop AIG's operating plan and long-term strategy, with responsibility for executing commercial lines and consumer strategies, underwriting, claims, distribution, reinsurance, global business services and administration.

Zaffino is a member of the board of directors of the Michael J. Fox Foundation and he joined the board of the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund in 2013.
Personal life
Zaffino and his wife Kirsten were based in Darien, Connecticut as of 2014.
