Enea develops and delivers software and expert services for companies that develop communication-intensive products for the connected society. As a vendor of real-time operating systems to the world's largest Tier-1 telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs) and network equipment manufacturers (NEPs), Enea has decades' worth of experience from mobile infrastructure and the real-time domain. Enea, which is an abbreviation of Engmans Elektronik Aktiebolag, is producing the operating system OSE (Operating System Embedded). Enea is global information technology company with its headquarters in Kista, Sweden
Enea offers various Network Function Virtualization (NFV) solutions for the edge market segment, and virtual Customer Premise Equipment (vCPE) use cases. The Enea NFV Core software platform enables deployment and management of vCPE network functions in central offices and data centers, whereas the Enea NFV Access software platform is designed for high networking performance and small form factor. The platforms are hardened and optimized for both ARM and Intel based hardware.
Enea adds further value and functionality through its Virtual Network Functions (VNF) additions and components. Enea Linux is available as a guest operating system for virtual machines. Enea Element ODM is a model driven framework for on-device-management, enabling configuration, monitoring and control of both virtual and physical network functions. Qosmos ixEngine offers Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) for VNFs.
Enea's NFV software solutions are based on open source technology, and are optimized, hardened, and integrated to provide solutions that run out-of-the-box. Depending on the use case, the open source products can be complemented with proprietary components. Our offering include NFV infrastructure, MANO solutions, VNF components, and lab infrastructure for development and methodology.
Products include:
- Enea NFV Access, a lightweight virtualization software platform uniquely designed for deployment on edge devices at customer premise. It is streamlined for high networking performance and minimal footprints for both platform and VNFs, resulting in very high compute density. Enea NFV Access provides a foundation for vCPE agility and innovation, reducing cost and complexity for computing at the network edge.
- Enea NFV Core, a carrier-grade virtualization software platform built on OPNFV and OpenStack. It enables deployment and management of virtual Customer Premise Equipment (vCPE) network functions in central offices and data centers, utilizing cost efficient generic hardware platforms.
- Enea Linux, a purpose built commercial embedded Linux distribution for multiple architectures. It is Yocto Project compatible and aligned with the Yocto Project release schedule. Enea Linux enables high throughput and low latency for physical networking and NFV applications.
- the Enea OSE family of real-time operating systems including Enea OSE, Enea OSEck (for DSPs) and Enea OSE Epsilon (for microcontrollers) - all three operating systems share the same modular architecture microkernel architecture making application migration a simple process. Enea OSE Multicore Edition was released in 2009 and won the VDC Research Group Best of Show Award at the ESC Boston trade show. Enea OSE Multicore Edition offers both AMP and SMP processing in a hybrid architecture.
- Qosmos ixEngine, a Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) library for software developers who wish to embed detailed, real-time visibility into their networking or security products.
- the Polyhedra family of relational database systems, consisting of 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Polyhedra in-memory database management system (IMDB), and Polyhedra FlashLite (which holds the data in flash-based files)
- Enea ElementCenter, a model-driven Element Management System (EMS)/Network Management System (NMS) development framework with full FCAPS functionality and out-of-the-box NETCONF/YANG support.
- the Enea Element middleware software for high-availability systems, based on technology developed by Equipe Communications Corp
- LINX, an adaptable inter-process communication mechanism that has been released via SourceForge in open source forms (with proprietary forms for OSE and other platforms).
In addition to its line of off the shelf software products, Enea has a global services operation offering end to end development and support for technology products. This includes design, development, testing and maintenance, and off-shoring. Enea has particular expertise in testing and testing training, telecom applications, and safety and certification.

History
Enea was founded 1968 by Rune Engman as Engmans Elektronik AB. Their first product was an operating system for a defence computer used by the Swedish Air Force. During the 1970s the firm developed compiler technology for the programming language Simula.
During the early days of the European Internet-like connections, Enea employee Björn Eriksen connected Sweden to EUnet using UUCP, and registered enea as the first Swedish domain in April 1983. The domain was later converted to the internet domain enea.se when the network was switched over to TCP and the Swedish top domain .se was created in 1986.
